Research

An intersecting point for change occurs between advocate, researcher/scholar, and

practitioner. Women Empowered To Prosper Resource Center provides a space to

highlight research and advocacy pieces that give insight into social challenges that affect

the lives of women, children, and families impacted by incarceration, poverty, and

disenfranchisement. Welcome to the Empowerment Center!

Being highlighted is the Director of Community Development and Researcher for

Women Empowered to Prosper Resource Center and Director of the National Executive Council at the Columbia Center for Justice Jay Holder, along with his co-authors Ivan Calaff, Brett Marique, and Van Tran, for the publication of their study "Concentrated incarceration and the public-housing-to-prison pipeline in New York City Neighborhoods" in PNAS (the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences). The study demonstrates the spatial concentration of incarceration in housing tracts and documents how hyper surveillance is maintained through features such as vertical patrols, stop and frisk, and ubiquitous cameras.
